Linux Revenues Inch Up at SCO

Linux-related revenues moved up slightly at SCO Group in its fourth quarter ended October 31.

Of its $15.5 million in revenues the company reported, Linux-related turnover amounted to 5%, according to SCO executives, compared to 2%, or about $300,000, in Q3.

SCO’s Q4 Linux revenues came from its Volution Manager and old OpenLinux products.

Its United Linux distribution only started shipping in November.

Total revenues for the quarter were in line with the company’s guidance of $14 million-$16 million, with the bulk of the revenues coming from the Unix side of its business.

It lost $2.7 million net, or 26 cents per share. SCO said that but for a non-cash charge of $1.5 million and a restructuring charge of $1.1 million, the net loss would only have been $62,000 or a penny a share.

In Q3, inclusive of charges SCO lost $4.5 million, or 35 cents, on revenues of $15.4 million.

On the earnings call, SCO CEO Darl McBride said the company was “very pleased with the results of the fourth quarter.”

For the full year, it lost $24.9 million net, or $1.93 a share, on revenues of $64.2 million.

“In net, we feel good about where our business is,” McBride claimed. “We are now ready to start growing our business.”

SCO is forecasting revenues of $13.5 million-$15.5 million this quarter, with a gross margin between 78% and 80% and a reduction in operating expenses of 5%-7%.

The company expects to reach EBITDA breakeven this quarter, which ends on January 31. If that happens, it’ll be the first time in its history that the company generates cash from ongoing operations.
