10gen Backs Up MongoDB

Backups are hard to build correctly, and moving data between environments for testing & other data workflows is subject to error

Big Data projects are notoriously difficult to back up because data volumes change so quickly and unpredictably.

So 10gen, the open source MongoDB commercializer, put out in limited release Tuesday what it calls a “critical new tool” that’s supposed to let companies of all sizes protect their data with a turnkey, pay-as-you-go, cloud-based back-up service engineered for its NoSQL database.

The widgetry includes data security, high availability, point-in-time restore and sharded cluster support. The service joins the free cloud-based MongoDB Monitoring Service (MMS) that’s got more than 14,000 users.

10gen CTO Eliot Horowitz says, “The Backup Service solves a critical problem for ops teams and developers. Backups are hard to build correctly, and moving data between environments for testing and other data workflows is subject to error. The Backup Service is a key step for us as we continue to build out a full management suite for MongoDB systems of all sizes.”

The widgetry reportedly has excellent granularity for restorable snapshots with little overhead

Key Features include:

  • Data Security – All data transferred is SSL-encrypted. Two-Factor Authentication is required for all restores.
  • High Availability – Backups are archived in multiple, fault-tolerant, geographically dispersed data centers.
  • Point-in-Time Recovery – Users can restore their systems to any point in time.
  • Sharded Cluster Support – From a single server to hundreds of servers, reliable backup and restore is provided to a consistent point in time across all shards.
  • Managed Solution – Backup Service eliminates the need for custom backup monitoring, scripts and storage. 10-gen has a dedicated support team to monitor the system and alert users if problems arise.
  • Low Overhead – Install a lightweight agent in minutes and begin backing up immediately.
  • Unlimited Restores – Users restore to seed new secondaries, build a Dev/QA environment and send data to others without impacting the production environment.

Users can pay for the Backup Service monthly via credit card. They pay for what they use, nothing more. Users can also reserve a spot for the limited release by signing up at General availability is expected this summer.

Carl Olofson, research VP for database management and data integration software at IDC, says, “It’s easy to miscalculate required storage for the life of your project and to find yourself falling short or overpaying for excess capacity. 10gen’s cloud-based backup service makes the management and cost of backup operations simple and predictable.”

As one of the more popular new technologies, MongoDB has seen more than four million downloads, 50,000 online education registrations, 15,000 MongoDB User Group (MUG) members, 17,000 MongoDB Monitoring Service users and 10,000 attendees at MongoDB global events last year.

10gen’s 600 commercial customers include Cisco, Craigslist, Disney, eBay, Ericsson, Forbes, Foursquare, Intuit, LexisNexis, McAfee, MTV,, Shutterfly and Telefonica.

Common use cases include operational and analytical Big Data, content management and delivery, mobile and social infrastructure, user data management and data hub.

The widgetry reportedly had 1,000 private beta testers. 10gen says it can accurately predict how much space a user needs. The widgetry is integrated into its monitoring system. In-motion data is encrypted and there’s two-level authentication if that’s worth anything.

10gen will charge for back up but not restore.
