VMware Dumps SlideRocket

The sale is supposed to turn VMware’s focus back on the software-defined data center, the cloud and virtualization

VMware has dumped its free-standing SlideRocket SaaS collaboration widgetry into the lap of four-year-old San Francisco-based ClearSlide whose cloud-based PowerPoint technology services enterprise salespeople wanting to engage with customers.

The data it collects is supposed to show how presentations are received.

Terms weren't disclosed. VMware bought SlideRocket in 2011.

The sale, which VMware signaled a couple of months ago, is supposed to turn VMware's focus back on the software-defined data center, the cloud and virtualization, core technologies that all need investment.

SlideRocket's people and widgetry will reportedly be integrated into ClearSlide's platform, contributing interactive multimedia presentations. SlideRocket reportedly grew 400% since its acquisition. It claims a million users.

ClearSlide, which has reportedly got thousands of corporate users, has seen $39 million in funding.

It's unclear what the sale means for Zimbra, the e-mail and collaboration software VMware bought from Yahoo a couple of years ago - which like SlideRocket - was to free users from Microsoft.

It's thought the people at SlideRocket may have been among the 900 VMware wants to fire.
