WikiLeaks Founder Ordered Extradited

Julian Assange's last hope is Britain’s Supreme Court

A UK appeals court Wednesday ordered WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange extradited to Sweden to answer questions about allegations of rape and sexual coercion made last year by two women.

Assange has claimed the complaints are politically motivated and that the two separate encounters in August of 2010 were consensual. Sweden has yet to make any formal charges against him.

Assange has also maintained that extradition to Sweden could mean his subsequent extradition to the United States where he could be tried for espionage for publishing a cache of diplomatic cables.

His last hope is Britain’s Supreme Court. In two weeks the appeals court is expected to be asked to decide if Assange has the right of further appeal. If that gambit doesn’t work he could be back in Sweden before the end of the month.

The Australian has been out on bail and under house arrest at a plushy British estate with an electronic monitoring device since December. He has to check in every day with the local police. He was ordered extradited by a lower court in February.

Last week Assange announced that WikiLeaks would have to shut down if Visa, MasterCard, PayPal, Bank of America and Western Union didn’t stop refusing to process financial donations to the web site, which has now been temporarily closed for lack of money.
