$2,000 Google Phone To Roll Out Tomorrow

Nexus One smartphone to be unveiled January 5 at the Googleplex?

Google has whistled up an honest-to-God press conference complete with lunch, something that’s very un-Google, apparently to unveil its purportedly iPhone 3G-killing, potentially Android cannibalizing Nexus One smartphone.

The gathering, which Google only describes as “Android-related,” is set for Tuesday, January 5 at the Googleplex in California (pictured) a couple of days before the Consumer Electronics Show starts, much like Apple did with iPhone two years ago.

There are leaked photos of the thing all over the place.

The Android 2.1-based, HTC-produced widget is supposed to have 3.7-inch touchscreen, 512MB of RAM and a 4GB SD card expandable to 32GB along with a five-megapixel camera.

According to Gizmodo Google means to sell an unsubsidized Nexus One for $530 at google.com/phone and let users make their own carrier arrangements such as are available. The web site will reportedly go live Tuesday morning.

Engadget says Google will offer the phone by invitation-only, presumably to developers. Then it will be sold for $180 by T-Mobile with a two-year contract for $80 a month ($1,820).

It reportedly doesn’t work on AT&T’s network. AT&T is the iPhone’s sole carrier in the US.

Gizmodo says if a user backs out of the plan before four months pass it’ll cost $350, the difference between the subsidized and unsubsidized price.
